1,000 letter a week for stars of a prime to show, even in it's 6th (and final) season isn't a heck of a lot when you consider the show must have had 20 million+ viewers. Even if it was on the #3 network which didn't get carried or 'cleared' completely, or at all in a few cities.

Yes, LITB was more successful in syndication than on ABC. It was acceptable for the number three network, but CBS cancelled it after the first season.

Was it his dancing from the record club episode?

It must have been mostly young girls writing to him. I can't imagine boys writing to him to congratulate Beaver for buying ice skates 3 sizes too big or getting stuck inside a soup cup on a billboard.
