Usher to headline the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show in Las Vegas

Usher will perform at the halftime show during Super Bowl LVIII in February, the NFL said Sunday, with the league selecting the eight-time Grammy winner to headline one of the most-watched events of the year.

1995 was a banner year for R&B music with bands and artists such as TLC SWV Monica and R. Kelly making their marks in R&B music. But that changed when Usher Raymond released his self-titled album with his debut singles Think Of You and The Many Ways and with a smart debut little did we know that Usher would become a superstar and a household name later on. But it was actually the My Way album from 1997 that actually made Usher a star because that album actually was a bestseller due to the title track and he would repeat the same success with his other album with the singles You Remind Me and You Don't Have To Call and Usher was happy with the success fame had brought him. But it was actually the Confessions album and the singles Yeah and Burn and You Got It Bad that proved that Usher still had it. But when his last album was released Usher went downhill due to personal problems. I think due to this Super Bowl halftime show it is a sign that we will see a new album from Usher in 2024 and he will make a stellar comeback like a Phoenix rising from the ashes

They should've had the one for early next year be one with nothing but acts from country music. They haven't done that since 1994. Doing it for the next show would've been a great way to acknowledge the 30-year anniversary. Mason Ramsey would be my first choice for part of the lineup with him being the future of country music and all.

Here's some insight for why there haven't been more country artists to headline the Super Bowl halftime show:

One more important thing to note about this halftime show, besides the fact that this was an all country halftime show, is the celebrity status of each of the singers at the show. In the country world, all four of these artists were huge at the time. Clint Black had seven #1 hits on the US country charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII, and all but one of his singles prior to Super Bowl XXVIII hit the top 4 on the country charts. Tanya Tucker had ten #1 hits on the US country charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII, and from 1990-93 (the four years prior to the Super Bowl), all but one single hit a spot on the top six of the country charts. Travis Tritt had three #1 hits on the US country charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII, and he had ten songs in the top ten from 1989-93. And, Wynonna Judd had three #1 hits on the US country charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII, with six songs in the top five in 1992 and 1993 alone. The Judds had fourteen #1 hits on the US country charts (all before Super Bowl XXVIII), including a stretch of eight straight #1 singles from 1984-86. Sounds like a successful lineup on paper, right?

Not so much. The problem with a country halftime show back then was that country music wasn’t popular in mainstream. Nowadays, you could easily pull off a show like this with country artists like Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Blake Shelton (just as an example), because country music is engrained in mainstream music. Clint Black’s highest charting single on the Billboard charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII was #43 (and he had no other songs hit the top 100). Tanya Tucker’s highest charting hit on the Billboard charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII was #37, and that was all the way back in 1975; her last top-100 hit prior to the game was all the way back in 1976. Travis Tritt’s highest charting single on the Billboard charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII was #108. Wynonna Judd’s highest charting hit on the Billboard charts prior to Super Bowl XXVIII was #77. And, The Judds never had a single hit the top 100 on the Billboard charts.

A pure country halftime show attracts a very specific audience, and it might be too specific for a Super Bowl halftime show. Remember when Coldplay got announced to do the Super Bowl halftime show? Whether or not you like Coldplay is an opinion, but at least you’ve heard of the band, and you know lots of songs by the band. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard “Paradise,” “Viva la Vida,” “Yellow,” “Clocks,” and “A Sky Full of Stars,” just to name a few. I’m not a huge Katy Perry fan, but I at least knew every song that she did at her Super Bowl halftime show last year (even if I hate “Dark Horse”). With a lineup like this, though, while those artists like Clint Black and Wynonna Judd may be A-list country stars and celebrities in their field, they’re virtually unknown on the pop charts. You just had to be alive in general to know who Michael Jackson was; however, you had to be a real country music fan to know who those four artists were going into Super Bowl XXVIII’s halftime show.
