WHO'S THE BOSS?: SAVOR THE VEAL {PARTS 2 AND 3 OF 3} {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Quote:
Summary

The finale of this series of comedies about advertising executive Angela Bower and her live-in housekeeper – former pro-baseball player Tony Micelli – and their respective families.

In this episode, Tony prepares to move from Connecticut to Iowa – not Idaho – for his exciting new associate professor/coach job, though Mona declares it to be a "butthead" decision. Samantha and Jonathan offer heartfelt farewells, sure that Tony and Angela can maintain their relationship with frequent visits. Tony and Angela then make the long drive to Iowa. Tony is delighted by his fancy new apartment, though he is intimidated to learn that the town takes its local sports seriously and does not tolerate losses. Angela is relieved to meet former Miss Iowa "Candy," Tony's elderly new secretary, but their first weekend alone together is repeatedly interrupted by work duties. They promise to reunite in three weeks' time, though their romantic airport good-bye is hampered by a no-nonsense flight attendant.

Tony enjoys immediate success in his new position, but he and Angela repeatedly miss one another over the phone. He arrives in Connecticut with the stomach flu, which he then spreads to the rest of the family; when Angela then flies out to Iowa, her luggage goes missing and the couple ends up squabbling over their lack of leisure time together. Candy wisely observes that Tony and Angela have unreasonably high expectations for their too-brief visits. Tony decides to surprise Angela with a visit – just as she arrives in Iowa, intending to surprise him with the news that she has chosen to move to Iowa full-time.

Learning of the mishap, Tony plans a surprise party for Angela to welcome her to Iowa, but she arrives drunk and disoriented. Soon Tony has to take her to lie down as she embarrasses herself in front of the guests. The next morning, she awakens with a terrible hangover to discover that her antics made the local newspaper. She apologizes, explaining that she drank to alleviate her uneasiness about the move. Ned arrives and Angela apologizes to him for her behavior; he forgives her and invites her out to lunch while Tony is teaching classes. Angela takes to her new life readily, making friends and learning the ins and outs of Iowa's culture. She also begins taking up painting and knitting as hobbies, and Tony notes how relaxed she seems. After a month, Angela's life seems to slip into a kind of monotony, and she starts to feel dissatisfied.

Sam, Jonathan, Mona, and Hank visit Tony and Angela, and are very much surprised by the change in Angela’s demeanor. Mona informs Angela that her firm may be losing an important account, and Angela panics, vowing to return to New York immediately to settle the matter. Mona admits that she fabricated the story to see how Angela would react; she believes that Angela misses her old life; Angela admits that she is somewhat unhappy, but doesn’t want to tell Tony. Tony’s baseball team wins the finals, leaving him ecstatic. Dr. Graham subsequently informs Tony that he’s offering him a new three-year contract; Tony is excited but notices that Angela does not share his happiness, and asks Dr. Graham for time to think about it. They speak about it in private, and Angela admits that she misses her old life, stress and all. Angela believes she can “gear up” for another three years, but Tony doesn’t want her to feign happiness on his account. Angela points out that Tony loves it in Iowa and doesn’t want to leave, and that returning with her to Connecticut would leave him unemployed and unhappy. They are at an impasse and fear that this arrangement will prevent their upcoming marriage from working out.

Angela returns home for two months, but finds her life is just as dissatisfying without Tony. Mona urges her to reunite with Tony, but Angela believes she can get along without him. Sam visits Tony again to see him receive an award for “Outstanding New Teacher of the Year.” His friends on the college staff make attempts to set him up with single women to help him get over Angela, although he still misses her. One day, Angela opens her door to find Tony standing there, asking to fill her vacant housekeeping position in a recreation of their very first meeting. Tony explains that he quit his job in Iowa, since even with his accolades and accomplishments, his life felt empty without her. He assures her that he can apply for local jobs and take his chances, but that the important thing is that they’re together. They kiss and Angela gives him his old job back.
