Despite its inconsistencies, the writer says the show was still a cut above your average TGIF entry.

I can't figure out why Boy Meets World became a smash sitcom for ABC in the 90's. I saw a few episodes with my mom and why I think what made Boy Meets World is because as with every sitcom that has teen idols it attracts an audience of girls. And when Boy Meets World debuted the two crushes of teenage girls were Ben Savage and Rider Strong but as the show continued in the 90's Rider Strong was the top crush of teen girls and next to Jonathan Taylor Thomas Rider Strong was the second star in teen magazines such as Bop Teen Seventeen Big Bopper Tiger Beat and Teen Beat by having posters in almost every issue. But when I think Boy Meets World went downhill was when they changed the theme song and new characters joined the cast and I think ABC wanted to develop a new storyline and image for the show because the original theme song was very upbeat but the new theme song had lyrics and was a Beach Boys-like theme song and I think that's what caused ABC to cancel the show

Somebody on the Boy Meets World subreddit said that in hindsight, the one big reason why the show may have so much nostalgia value is that is the one great TGIF show to be born on TGIF and to die on TGIF. And the end of Boy Meets World in 2000 was part of the end of that whole era of TV.
