Ropers
I loved Helen. She put Stanley in his place and was always the heroine for the kids |

The Ropers banter between themselves sometimes had the biggest laughs. Even though the kids were the stars of the show, many times an episode would begin in the Roper's apartment. Furley was great but he did not have a sidekick like Helen. He needed interaction with the kids to be funny. The Ropers added more to the show for that reason. Both Helen and Stanely had the funniest lines towards themselves almost every episode. There was no replacing them. However Furley did come close flying solo.

I dont think its so simplistic to say Stanley vs Ralph. For me Helen was what made the show funnier. Her sexual frustration always had the biggest laughs. Ralph was funny but he was zany. Stanley was more realistic. But his sidekick Helen was the icing on the cake for me. Besides having some of the funniest lines, she also was a heroine to the kids from the Stanley's wrath. It just had more depth than just a zany landlord going for laughs.

The Ropers era was my favorite. Mr. Furley was an over the top caricature, my least favorite type of character. That's why I was never able to sit through an episode of "Family Matter" because of the Urkel character.
