In the 1st season ('59-'60) the Cartwrights were very hard on anyone who came on their property, whether business related or whatever -- even hostile at times. After Greene and others pointed out that was unrealistic and needed to change, the family became much more accepting and fair-minded. So if Dan thought otherwise, it was not an accurate portrait of the series in '64 and somewhat misleading to those unfamiliar.

A real conservative dad during that time period, would have kicked his grown kids out of the house and told them to get a job.
