Regarding Martin Crane & His Two Sons

I had never seen “Frasier” during by its initial run on NBC. However, I’ve been watching the show during its current airing on COZI-TV. The show is really outstanding with its superb cast and equally great writing.

One thing that has puzzled me is how regular guy Martin Crane, a retired police detective (portrayed brilliantly by the late, lamented John Mahoney) could have two sons, who were both such snobs and almost “to the manor born”?

In fact, how could Martin “Marty” Crane have given his sons the snotty and pompous-sounding Christian names of “Frasier” and “Niles”? Maybe the late Mrs. Martin Crane came from money and prestige and was as snooty and judgmental as were Mrs. Margaret Drysdale on “The Beverly Hillbillies” or the perpetually social-climbing Mrs. Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet”) of “Keeping Up Appearances”?

In any event, it’s always great fun to see Martin Frasier interact with his two “chip-off-the-old-block” sons.

I think that in Cheers Frasier was supposed to be from that sort of background. They toned it down in Frasier and eventually settled where Frasier's mom was a cultured person and Martin just worked all kinds of overtime as a cop to provide the boys with elite education.

I do have to say that Frasier Crane is, at least, a very congenial snob, not nearly as haughty and supercilious as such other noted tv snobs as “Dark Shadows’” Roger Collins or M*A*S*H’s” Major Charles Emerson Winchester III.
