Superhero stories have often represented some of the best -- and worst -- that Hollywood has to offer. Few genres have as much range as superheroes, in large part, due to the versatility of the characters, settings and themes. When it comes to TV shows based on comics, the outcomes have been mixed, especially in the modern era. Some series have gone so far as to harm the genre itself.

Superhero shows occupy a unique space in the genre, with fans often looking to the comics to fill a gap between movies. However, sometimes the middling status of these series makes them a weak link in the genre. Likewise, some series can become so popular that they make other shows seem mediocre in comparison. The superhero genre presents many challenges to creators, and these series only add to the list.

Batman '66 is perhaps one of the genre's most iconic shows, and single-handedly helped elevate Batman to the position of prominence he enjoys now. However, it also made comic book content seem infantilizing and tacky to an entire generation of people.

As much as many people look back on the series with fond nostalgia, most understand that its style couldn't have worked in any era other than the '60s. It also began the general DC over-dependence on Batman, something that has made the company money but diminished its other properties.
