How did Sam's mother die - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I know that this is an extremely morbid topic but I thought about this after recently watching the "Ad Man Micelli" episode from the second season, when Sam's friends at her slumber party see a photo of her late mother in a locket.

Of course, we know that Sam's mom is already deceased at the start of the series. But I don't think that we're ever told about the full circumstances behind her death. Maybe, they didn't want to delve too deeply into that because that's a pretty dark subject matter. And a lot of '80s sitcoms had this weird trend of killing the mothers off.

There's supposedly an episode where Tony says "when Marie got sick...", which naturally means that it was an illness and not an accident that took her life.
