The arrival of Captain Raymond Holt at the NYPD's 99th precinct changed life for its group of detectives immediately. Unlike the previous captain, Holt didn't care about fooling around and playing games. Captain Holt was there to make his squad the best they could be.

Enlisting the help of Sergeant Terry Jeffords, Holt took particular interest in Jake Peralta. Despite being brilliant at cracking cases, in the words of Terry, Jake never figured out how to grow up.

It wouldn't take long for Captain Holt and Jake to develop a close bond. The pair experienced a lot together, even finding themselves as neighbours in Florida when they went into witness protection. Jake would be there to protect Holt's husband when he was threatened. Jake would even insert himself into Holt's personal life when he separated from Kevin.

Captain Holt would mentor Amy, listen to death metal music with Rosa to help her get over a break up and find a great friend and assistant in Gina. There wasn't a person in the 99 who wasn't helped by Holt, so when he and Amy were promoted together, it seemed a fitting time to say goodbye to Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
