it's not really a plothole, tony knew some insults, but thats a long long long way from being fluent in italian and his insults weren't exactly in italian, they are like a mixture of certain southern languages which over the years have been more and more americanized.

tonys boat is called the stugots, which means "this di-ck" but if you went to italy and said "stugots" they'd have no idea what you were talking about.

every american knows some spanish words "nada" "salsa" "cinco de mayo".... but would be completely lost in guatemala trying to speak to people.

it's the same logic.

I enjoyed it whenever Tony would tease Dr. Cussomano, his next door neighbor, by calling him, “Coose.” In fact, To y would say that Dr. “Coose” Cussomano was a “Wonder Bread ‘ W@P,” an Italian-American who had turned his or her back on their Italian heritage.

Carmella Soprano also told off her snooty mother, who had previously said that she was glad that their family surname, DeAngelis, did NOT end in a vowel like A-O-I-or E. Carmella also criticized her mother for saying how typically southern-European, dark Meadow was when she was born, unlike A.J. Soprano who was not at all dark/swarthy like his older sister was.
