I know that there are all of the musical licensing issues the show had, which is why it took so long for it to come out on DVD.

Besides that, did the show ultimately suffer from a clash between what MTV wanted in a show created by 11 twenty somethings to be and what 11 NYU film and theater geeks wanted it to be? Later, the company decided to leave MTV to try to negotiate a network deal, which led to a one time special on CBS. And then, various members of the group split up for a time.
