Listened to a long James Burrows interview. He has to be one of the dryest, boring, humorless classic tv people I've ever heard. Created, wrote, and directed brilliant classic tv. Said he's been blessed with great humor. But he says nothing funny. If a story is funny he kills it telling it how humorless he is. The guy is a classic tv genius. But, you'd never guess it listening to him.

His dad, Abe Burrows, was apparently quite a party guy, so maybe James grew up more an observer.
There are several interviews online where Taxi people relate the Andy Kaufman/Tony Clifton story, and you're right, Burrows version is very analytical. |

I don't know. He got into theater work while he was still a teen, I think, starting off as a roadie. If I recall correctly from his recent book, he advanced as far as directing a touring company for a major show. At that point he got hired by MTM as some sort director trainee, and was directing episodes pretty quickly. But he was about 35 by then.
The book is also very dry. |

Burrows himself happily acknowledged the work of his mentor and friend, Jay Sandrich, who himself was a protege of Sheldon Leonard.

Very good director. I was disappointed by his book and in seeing his interviews. Very grim and impersonal.
