The rise and fall of ironic detachment in sitcoms
What's your overall opinion of this trend or arc? For example, the Full House, premiered in 1987 and was ultra sincere.
About two years later, came the decidedly cynical Seinfeld. Arrested Development come the mid-2000s, was probably the peak of the post-Seinfeld cynical sitcom arc. There was also, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is darker and more cynical than anything else though. Sincerity in sitcoms probably didn't become really popular again until The Office and Parks & Recreation. |
