To keep up with the times and their new image MTV had always wanted to add more shows about music and better ways to showcase the hottest music videos and so they started doing this with an inventive idea a show that would showcase fan favorite music videos with an interactive live format and Total Request Live or TRL was born. I truly think that TRL actually was the show that wanted to keep MTV playing music videos on the channel. Because in the past MTV had the shows Club MTV with Downtown Julie Brown and the R&B based The Grind and they thought with a similar format they would do the same with TRL. But I think what made TRL a hit was having Carson Daly as host and if it wasn't for TRL Carson Daly would've never been so huge expanding his career as a late night host for NBC. But with videos from artists such as Christina Aguilera Britney Spears Eminem to rock groups like REM and Soundgarden and The White Stripes helped shaped TRL into what it would soon become. But when MTV announced the cancellation of TRL it truly left a mark on MTV watchers and fans and when this happened I truly think it meant the death of music videos forever on MTV and that would change MTV's image for good
