One of the main sources of conflict in Malcolm in the Middle is that of the siblings and their mother Lois, who they view as controlling and over-bearing. On the other hand, the boys cause a LOT of trouble which not only affects them individually. But the family as a whole and Lois's harsh demeanor is often an attempt to reign them in.
