Default Why haven't they made a new version of the Beverly Hillbillies?

Outside of course, the 1993 feature film. But besides that, there have been so many remakes of old movie/TV shows in the 30 or so years since that movie first came out.

It seems ppl have moved away from this style of comedy nowdays. They also have never remade Green Acres, The Andy Griffin Show, and a lot of others, which I think could be decent

They did do a remake movie in 1990 called Return to Green Acres with most of the original cast. But it was horrible. Google search the title and it may be on Youtube?

There were plans for one several years ago. I don't remember the details, but it never panned out.

Those shows with actors names in them, like The Dick Van Dyke Show or The Andy Griffith Show, don't lend themselves to remakes well because you would have to rename them. I think the Andy Griffith Show would lend itself well to a movie, maybe call it Mayberry or something.

The Dick Van Dyke Show is my favorite show ever, but I don't know how it would translate today, it's so grounded in having Laura as a housewife. Some people would have fits over that today.

But yeah, as far as the Beverly Hillbillies, the rural type shows aren't really in fashion anymore. They could be, but that's not what Hollywood is about these days, they look down on rural people.

A few years ago there was talk of a reality show that took a some people from a rural area and moved them to Beverly Hills. To my knowledge it never came about. Such gentle and genuine humor the original show offered would be a hard sell today. Shows now are so mean spirited and full of adult humor. I admit to watching them, but still enjoy the family friendly classics of the 60s.

I posted in the Andy Griffith Show forum a year or so ago about an idea I had about an Andy Griffith Show remake series, but set it in TODAY'S time. They could remake all the old episodes but with a modern day spin to them, they would have the issues of TODAY to deal with. But in that magical Mayberry way, still contain the ESSENCE and wholesomeness of the original show.

I think one episode would be a flashback episode maybe Andy recalls about his grandfather which would be set in the 60s when the original show was taking place and having things be like they were in the original show in the flashback

I recorded it when it originally ran. I say it was made ten years too late. Mr. Haney was out of character—he was shady in the series, but made an outright crook in the movie.

The only redeeming aspect in the film was that it mostly centered on the young romance of the Ziffels’ niece, and didn’t spend too much time on the now-much-older actors/characters.

But back to the thread at hand!

I sorta liked the remake, there were several heart-felt moments I thought. But yeah I didn't like how Haney became an all out traitor... in the original show he was a con-artist but still "one of them", he was an all-out villain in the movie

So, the lead character would be Opie's son... Andy Taylor?

Interesting.

I don't remember seeing the Green Acres reunion, but, agreed, most of those type shows are not very good.

Interesting.

That might be a good idea... BUT what I had in mind was an unrelated re-make of the show... not like a sequel show... There would still be Andy, Bea, Barney, etc..... but they would just be updated version... Bee would be what a "Bee type woman" would be like TODAY in 2023... It would be all updated, but still manage to keep the "Mayberry charm" But we could assume that back in the 1960s, this Mayberry would be like it was in the 1960's original show.

Barney might have a different name, since Barney is not that common nowdays... Maybe Billy or something

Aren't the words "updated" and "Mayberry charm" oxymorons?

I'm not sure what a Bee type woman would be like today.

Good questions, not sure if I could enjoy the answers.

🙂
