'Hong Kong Phooey' coming to big screen - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) -- First "Scooby-Doo," now "Hong Kong Phooey."

The 1970s Hanna-Barbera cartoon, about a clumsy, kung-fu-using detective dog, is being turned into a feature by "Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner.

His Rat Entertainment production banner will produce the live-action/computer-animated comedy with Alcon Entertainment, the Warner Bros.-based firm that recently released "Insomnia."

The picture will focus on the origin of Phooey's supernatural talents and a villain intent on stealing those powers. Alcon co-presidents Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove hope to turn the project into a family film franchise.

Ratner, who is developing the children's picture "Samurai Jack," returns to theaters this fall with the Hannibal Lecter thriller "Red Dragon."

I can't believe they're doing that, I don't see how it can really work well as a movie.

The other Hanna Barbera shows made into live action movies Flintstones and Scoobey Doo are both hugely populer and long running but didn't Hong Kong Phooey only ever have around 16 episodes.

I cannot believe that. It would be kinda disturbing as a live action movie.

Of all the cartoons you could turn into a movie, Hong Kong Phooey isn't in my top list. Wacky Races would be a better choice.

I wasn't pleased with the Scooby Doo Movie a Hong Kong Phooey movie will probably be bad too, imo.
