Movie "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania" Makes #1 for 2nd Weekend

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania Leads President's Day Weekend Box Office, Avatar: The Way of Water Surpasses Titanic
by Jeffrey Harris
Feb. 21, 2023

Marvel Studios took home another $100 million opening weekend at the box office with the Ant-Man threequel, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

The new Marvel release had a huge opening, with an estimated $105.5 million for its opening three-day weekend, and it’s currently projected to finish with about $120 million for the four-day holiday weekend, per Deadline.

Elsewhere, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water officially surpassed his previous film Titanic to become the third highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office.

This marks the biggest opening weekend yet for the Ant-Man franchise. Additionally, the film’s overseas weekend take was at an estimated $121 million. That brings its worldwide total to $226.5 million for the three-day weekend through Sunday.

Ant-Man 3 did not fare well with critics, with its critics’ score currently sitting at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score for a Marvel Studios film ever since 2021’s Eternals, which drew an identical score.

However, Marvel Studios films tend to still draw big openings and are very frontloaded at the box office. It will be interesting to see how the sequel performs in subsequent weekends.

At No. 2 was James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water continues to perform at the theatrical box office, bringing in another $6.45 million for the three-day total and about $7.9 million for the four-day weekend.

As of Sunday, The Way of Water officially grossed $2.2432 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing the Titanic box office at $2.2428 billion.

The Way of Water has drawn an estimated $657 million domestically and $1.586 billion overseas to make it the third highest-grossing movie ever.

Coming in at No. 3 was the sleeper hit Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which has continuously overperformed since its release in December.

The film has now brought in another $7.05 million for the holiday weekend to bring its domestic total to about $167.8 million. Overseas, the film has made an estimated $421.6 million as its numbers continue to climb.

Considering the animated sequel has already been released on home video-on-demand formats, its strong box office performance has been nothing short of impressive. The film also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Holds Off Cocaine Bear for its Second Weekend Box Office Win
by Adam Bankhurst
Feb. 26, 2023

Despite a 69% drop from its opening weekend, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania held off a strong $23 million performance by Cocaine Bear to win its second domestic weekend box office with $32.2 million.

As reported by Variety, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has now seen the biggest week-to-week drop for an MCU film and has surpassed Thor: Love and Thunder's 67% drop to claim the unfortunate top prize. For extra context, right behind Thor: Love and Thunder sits Black Widow's 67.8% drop and Eternals' 62% drop.

Globally, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has earned $364 million, with $167 million coming in from North America and $196 million from international theaters.

Cocaine Bear came out roaring with an impressive opening weekend, bringing in $23 million in North America and $5.3 million overseas.

Globally, the film sits at $28.4 million and is on its way to earning back its roughly $35 million budget.

Jesus Revolution took third place with $15.5 million, and it outperformed expectations by nearly doubling the $6 million to $7 million analysts thought it would make.

Jesus Revolution cost $15 million and follows "a youth minister and a pastor as they partake in the evangelical Christian movement that swept Southern California in the early 1970s."

Avatar: The Way of Water and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish rounded out the top five with $4.7 million and $4.1 million, respectively.

Avatar: The Way of Water, which is now the third highest-grossing film of all time, brought its global total to a massive $2.267 billion.

Coming soon are Creed III, Scream VI, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and John Wick: Chapter 4.
