Sally Struthers had a few ideas for her character on All in the Family. Including one idea that came true.

I think it was a fine set up the way that it was. However there were times Gloria did work at the cosmetic counter to help with supporting her husband. The premise just worked with Archie being the bread winner while supporting a non-working college guy free-loading in his house with his daughter.
But I can see how playing the role of Gloria that you would want to make her more developed.
