Default How MTV went from Cool to Lame

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPcbuz9gQmE

Quote:
The 80's and 90's in America, it seemed like everybody wanted their MTV. The music video was brand-spanking new, and MTV was the epitome of "cool." But, times inevitably change, and so do fads. What happened when the music stopped, and reality TV took over? Let's reminisce about the days when MTV ruled the airwaves!

A network based 95% on one show is Ridiculousness.

The beauty of MTV, from the 1980s perspective, was that you could put it on all available televisions...at a party for instance, and anyone who wanted to watch could....but participation wasn't mandatory. And you could watch for a time, get lost in something else, and then go back to watching it without paying a penalty, like you might in a movie, missing important elements that made the rest of the movie meaningless. SO it was "re-entrant" entertainment....you didn't have to stay glued to it 100% in order to enjoy it.

The above clip reminded me how I Fell out with MTV in the first place. I had forgotten. But it was their dedication to diversity that drove me away. circa 1990s
The Rap.....just didn't like it...drove me away....and by the time I'd find something else, just never bothered to tune back. Artists offended me and not entertained me.

The separation was so complete that by the time others (2000s) were complaining about MTV being "all reality"....I was like "so wha? MTV SUX, Everybody knows that"

I decided to look up the schedule of MTV for Thursday, December 8th. It is mostly a show called "Ridiculousness" which I have never heard of. But again, I havent watched MTV since Reagan was President. It at least then, was a network for teenagers. I grew up.

From their wessite, MTV does seem to have a lot of shows, but only shows Ridiculousness the vast majority of the time and two others for this 24 hour cycle.

Actually "Broke Ass Game Show" sounds oddly interesting.

If MTV can't play music videos anymore, since they can be found anywhere online, why can't they play shows that are ABOUT music? Wouldn't documentaries on popular singers or the history of certain genres do well? Or would it simply not make much sense on a cost to ratings ratio at this point?

MTV to me had problems when it did mainly show music videos. The main issue was that it basically showed all genres from "Hip Hop" to "Heavy Metal" To me, that was too much of a variance. VH1 did it better because it was one genre, adult contemporary.

I was a teenager in the 1980's and MTV was a HUGE part of the culture and many acts became famous because of MTV. It was basically a radio station TV network. This was the place to see our favorite musicians perform. Now, because of the internet, there are many mediums to watch any kind of video we want. So MTV has become obsolete.

I remember Kurt Loder in the heyday. Loder did "MTV News" which mainly talked about various singers and bands, where they were going to play and when, and personal news about them if applicable. Loder to me however was SO SERIOUS and talked about the Dead Kennedy/Butthole Surfer concert at CBGB's with the straight face of a correspondent in Moscow. Maybe you remembered and liked him, and he is still alive at 75.

MTV should just show Beavis and Butthead 24 hours a day, that I would watch.

Dave Holmes recently did a podcast about the rise and fall of MTV. It’s called Who Killed the Video Star, and the last episode goes into detail about Ridiculousness.

MTV in the 1980s & the 1990s>>>>>Current MTV

MTV has been shell of its former self in recent years since the 2000s and completely never the same
