What was with this show's downright creepy obsession with virginity

For example, Mary was supposed to have a scene where she practices kissing her brother Matt which both Jessica Biel and Barry Watson protested against. And the whole relationship seemed like sexual tension with Matt obsessed with Mary's virginity.

And Eric and Annie, the parents were always on Mary's case and thought she was a whore for some reason. It seemed like the Camden daughters were constantly talking about dating and boys and kissing if they weren't already seemingly sexualized.

Then, Simon's character was slut-shamed when he lost his virginity and was seeing different girls. All in all, the topic of safe sex never came up once.

That is just how things were back in those days. Eric and Annie did what they could where premarital sex was concerned, but sadly it was always going to be the rest of the world versus them.
