SNL will stay on as long as it is making money for the network at that time slot. I guess it is because it is still on, and more or less has a mostly new cast.
NBC is still making money on an otherwise, would be dead time slot. What would replace SNL on a late Saturday night at 10:30/11:30 pm? From what I have read over the years, SNL is not that expensive of a production to make. Especially the lower players make less than a $100,000 a year if that, I read once the lower players make $5000 a show (but dont quote me on that). I dont know how much the featured players make or how long their contracts are, but maybe it's year to year so the "star" players can make a lot more money, like Kate McKinnon. The musical guests now (I think, correct me if I am wrong) are usually up and comers Add a guest host (and a lot of these guest hosts I have never heard of), writers (probably many of them talented but beginners) and the cost of production. I cannot tell you how much it costs altogether to produce a show, but NBC is making a lot more money in commercials (and Peacock and downloads) than the cost of production. I havent watched SNL on NBC for years since I do not live in the USA, but how many advertisers does the show have? SNL will stay on as long as the show turns a profit, even a small one. |

I believe I've heard over the years that the cast makes as much as a professor. It's not riches but it certainly gets them seen.
