Default FCC Proposes $3.4 Million In Fines To Stations For Violating Children’s Ad Limits...

With Hot Wheels Commercials

Quote:
The FCC has proposed $3.4 million in fines to 21 broadcast licensees for the airing of Hot Wheels Super Ultimate Garage commercials during episodes of Team Hot Wheels.

The FCC said that was a violation of children’s TV programming rules, which limit the number of minutes of commercial time that can air during children’s programming. In this case, it was a violation of a program-length commercial policy, designed to restrict the interweaving of program content from commercials.

The largest proposed fine was $2.65 million to Sinclair Broadcast Group. In its report — read it here — the agency said that in November, 2020, Sinclair voluntarily informed staff of the Media Bureau that a total of 85 of its stations had aired program length commercials “and thus failed to fully comply with the Children’s Programming Commercial Rules.”

When you take a popular toy and base it on a cartoon show or movie it usually means that more people will buy more of the toyline that the cartoon or movie is based on. TV commercials that air during cartoons based on toys used to be a hot fad for toy companies to do to make the toys sell. Take for example in the 80's when the Jem cartoon came out during commercial breaks for Jem Hasbro would air My Little Pony commercials as a way to market My Little Pony toys and it was repeated when the My Little Pony "n" Friends cartoon had commercial breaks but with Jem commercials and was simply because Hasbro along with Marvel Entertainment "yes the very same Marvel Entertainment that created all the comic books and heroes and is a Caesar's Empire now" produced all the cartoons based on the toylines as a way to sell toys better and they didn't break any FCC rules during the 80's. But what I think is that due to this rule is we will begin to see less cartoons based on toys because they are responsible for kids begging parents to buy the hot toy either for Christmas or their birthdays. But it's like if you're trying to see a Marvel cartoon you see tons of commercials advertising Marvel action figures during commercial breaks. But I think Mattel should've limited the use of Hot Wheels commercials and had some commercials that catered to kids other than toys. I guess it has given the popular phrase "after these messages" a whole new meaning to commercials
