Default Lip Reader episode

Something in this episode never made sense. George uses Jerry's deaf girlfriend, Laura to read his ex, Gwen's lips while she's talking to another guy. Kramer who is supposed to understand sign language is assigned to translate the sign language into audible words. Now what doesn't make sense is when Gwen and Todd say: "sweep together." When they say that, Laura correctly signs "sweep" but Kramer says "sleep." Now why would he make that mistake when the sign for sweep looks nothing like the sign for sleep?

I didn't think it was funny at all. Sweep and sleep sound alike but the signs look nothing alike. There is no way that Kramer or anyone with half a brain could confuse the sign for sweep with "sleep."
I suppose that's the one and only thing that bugged me about the show.

I'm with Sarah on this one! If every writer had to be constantly worried about every line being technically correct, the art would suffer!

Like I said, it's the one and only thing about the show that bugged me. It's way too unrealistic, so it is not funny. There is no way anyone could confuse a sweeping sign with a sleeping sign. I could understand and even find it funny only if Laura mistakenly signed "sleep" instead of "sweep" but she didn't. She correctly signed "sweep." So it is totally absurd/unrealistic that Kramer would translate the word "sleep." WHY would he even think of that???

He's an idiot or the smartest in the room. No one can figure out which.

In his defense, I think there were people in the way and he was in a crowded room. He misread the sign due to circumstance.

Nope. He can't use that as a defense because the sign for sleep includes both hands on the side of the head. The sign for sweep is sweeping one hand on top of the other in front of you.
The only funny part of that incident was how George called both Laura and Kramer idiots. Laura didn't screw up. She did everything right. Kramer is the one who screwed up.
