German actress Nina Hoss is turning 47 today. Hoss was born in Stuttgart, and studied at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. She began working in German film, television and theater in the mid-1990s.

Hoss started becoming known to American audiences in the middle of the last decade. She made a guest appearance during season 4 of Homeland, and her character of Astrid returned in a recurring role during seasons 5 and 6.



Hoss first made a name for herself on German television. She was acclaimed for her starring performances in TV movies such as A Girl Named Rosemary and Something to Remind Me. In 2004, she was a Best Actress nominee at the German Film Awards, for Wolfsburg.

Hoss won Best Actress at the Bavarian Film Awards for the 2005 feature The White Masai. Two years later, she starred in Yella and won both a German Film Award and the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Some of her other notable films have been the vampire thriller/romance We Are the Night, Christian Petzold’s dramas Barbara and Phoenix, and the Swiss drama My Little Sister.

In 2014, Hoss had a supporting role in the international thriller A Most Wanted Man, adapted from John le Carré’s novel. She was a regular on the 2020 Netflix miniseries The Defeated, and earlier this year she appeared in the thriller The Contractor. She will be joining the cast of the upcoming season 3 of Jack Ryan.

Hoss has also worked regularly in German theater for over 20 years. She has starred in productions of Euripides’ Medea and Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes.
