Default Who's the Boss Sequel Series in the Works at Amazon Streaming Service Freevee

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: The Who’s the Boss? sequel series has found a home. The project, reuniting original stars Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano and executive produced by Norman Lear, has landed at Amazon Freevee for development. The followup is being written/executive produced by One Day at a Time co-creator/exec producer/co-showrunner Mike Royce and co-executive producer Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz. Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to the original series and has been working on the sequel for the last two years, is the studio.

Danza and Milano are set to reprise their roles as Tony and Samantha Micelli. Set 30 years after the events of the original series, the sequel will focus on former Major League Baseball player/retired housekeeper Tony Micelli (Danza) and his relationship with his daughter Samantha (Milano). She is now a single mother, living in the family house. In line with Norman Lear’s classic shows, the new comedy will explore generational differences, as well as opposing world views and parenting styles within the dynamic of a modern family in 2022.

The original sitcom ran for eight seasons and 196 episodes on ABC from 1984-92 and drew more than 30 million viewers in its heyday. It was nominated for 10 Emmy Awards and became a syndication staple.

While Lear was not a creative auspice on Who’s the Boss?, it is part of the extensive library under his Embassy Communications banner, which is now owned by Sony Pictures TV.

Lear and his producing partner Brent Miller of ACT III Productions executive produce the sequel alongside Danza, Milano, Royce, Muñoz-Liebowitz and Dan Farah of Farah Films, who originally brought the updated take to Sony with Danza and Milano attached.

This marks a reunion for Royce, Muñoz-Liebowitz, Lear and Miller after their work together on the reimagining of Lear’s classic One Day at a Time for Sony TV.

For Muñoz-Liebowitz, Who’s the Boss falls under the overall deal she has at Sony Pictures TV where she also is executive producer/showrunner on the new comedy series for HBO Max, Gordita Chronicles.

Again, no mention of Angela or Jonathan…

It’s gonna last one season and gone if they don’t have Judith full time.

Who's The Boss? Sequel Series - What We Know So Far

Quote:
Samantha and Tony will be back, but where's Angela?

According to a brief plot synopsis in The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel series will pick up with the Micellis thirty years after "Who's the Boss?" ended. Tony and Samantha now live together in Angela's suburban home with Samantha's children. That is certainly an interesting detail, as it raises a few questions, namely: Why are Tony and Samantha still living in Angela's home? And if Judith Light doesn't come back for the sequel series, we'll be very curious to know what happened to Angela and why she seemingly left her house to the Micellis.

Tony is retired from both housekeeping and coaching baseball, while Sam is a single mom — which once more puts Tony in charge of helping raise some kids. Naturally, this batch will be different from Jonathan and Sam, and the show's logline suggests it will mine its humor from the differences between Tony, Sam, and her children and the generational gaps that lie between them. There's no word as to what happened to Hank Thomopolis (Curnal Achilles Aulisio), whom Samantha married during Season 8, but it's safe to assume that the kids are from her marriage to him. Fans will have to keep their eyes peeled for more details as they develop.

Alyssa said 2 days ago that she didn't know what to expect with this reboot. They are still writing the pilot and she "hopes" it will make it on air.

If they don't get Judith full time this show is ruined. We don't care to see her as a Mom these days. She should have had kids with her husband YEARS AGO, not in the early 2010s or a few years prior. They're gonna go that route to scout out crap newbie actors who act all hip. It's the same with all these new shows.

I can't see it lasting more than 1 season. Tony is the only reason to watch, and without Angela...come on!

Angela either...

1. Moved out after she and Tony split up/divorced
2. Moved to another house with her new husband after the original ended

NOBODY WANTS THAT! Those are the only ways she could have left Sam the house. Sam bought it from her or rented it from her or something....Now Tony's moving in and single? Come on!

I don't think it would be that far fetched to imagine Sam having underaged children. Alyssa Milano is 49 years old now but her real life children I read, are 10 (her son) and 7 (her daughter). Assuming of course, that Hank is the father of her kids (and they got married 30 years ago) in this new version, then I suppose that it would be easier to imagine Sam having her kids much sooner.

Would this be the closest thing that Alyssa Milano had to a "solo" television vehicle? Of course, we don't know what the full extent of Tony Danza or even Judith Light's roles and participation in this new version of Who's the Boss?

Even though Alyssa was the first billed star on Charmed after Shannen Doherty's departure, that show was still at heart, an ensemble show. And on the old Who's the Boss?, Tony Danza and Judith Light were the "stars" and Alyssa was a supporting player.

I haven't seen her more recent show, Insatiable, but it appears to really be more of a showcase for Debby Ryan, post-Disney.

It's already been given a home at Freevee and she just wants to see it make it to the air.

Something tells me they aren't getting a season yet. They just got the pilot to film. The way they did Coach I can see it happening here. What they will do with Angela will ruin this. They killed off Christine on Coach's reboot pilot. Fans weren't too happy about that. You just had the star of that show interacting with some newbies and it wasn't funny and it was shut down halfway through the taping of the pilot. I'm thinking that won't happen here, but it won't get many viewers. Nobody knows this show. Anyone over 40/45 and older would (very few mid 30s would know it), but many don't like Alyssa and would only watch for Tony/Angela together.. That alone will be the death of this as they won't be.

The dumb writers will write whatever we have to believe...

1. Angela and Tony split again after 1992, she married someone else. She left the house to Sam and Hank and Tony got his own place after Angela married another man
2. Angela and Tony either married and moved elsewhere shortly after 1992 and left Sam and Hank the house. They split and now Tony's moving in with Sam.
3. Angela is an emotional wreck after the loss of Mona. She leaves Sam the house and then Hank divorced her. She and Tony live elsewhere and are married but separated. She throws him out and needs peace on vacation.
4. Angela is overseas some crap like that. Working on something. She left Tony or they divorced. He moves in with Sam.

To me, Tony and Angela were living together elsewhere after 1992. I think that's the most logical thing here. Why the heck would he move "In" again?

Sam and Hank married but I DOUBT it would be believable they had kids this late in life? Or will she have kids with him and another "husband" who left her?

The very thought of Tony moving in and Angela not there, even just slightly from time to time gives me the hint the two NEVER married or they SPLIT UP and he was forced to move out and at the right time, when Sam was single again and needing to raise her kids.

Fans won't like these scenarios. They'd want Tony and Angela together. They would have wished they stayed together, maybe had kids or something after 1992....but we're not getting that.

It's obvious, even if they married or split, they didn't have any from the rumors of what will happen. Tony moves in. No word on single, divorced, or if he has more kids...

Angela with another man is gonna be crap. They'll probably go the Fuller House route. Angela and Tony never married but she married someone else, or they did marry and divorced/split and she's seeing someone new. BIG SHARK JUMPER IF THEY DID THAT. Even if Angela lives alone elsewhere and she has a new guy. Past audiences don't want that.

It's either they are happily married or NOTHING. And if he's moving in, would she be okay with it? Why wouldn't she be there from time to time as she's near retirement herself?! UGH! It just makes no sense if they are married and he moves in to help Sam....My guess is they split up if they are married and she's living elsehwere. Maybe even a state away? This will make it harder and harder for her to have appearances, and what if there's another man? Fans won't like it.

Fans on here would be the biggest clue this will be a success. They watched the original. There hasn't been much excitement on here with talk from fans. Not that much. If Family Matters was rebooted I'm sure they'd be TONS on that message board.

If they are the least bit for the original fans and Judith can't be there full time...

She and Tony married after he returned home from teaching in 1992/1993. SHe gave Sam and Hank the house. They lived there and now Sam is divorced and has kids later in life. Tony and Angela are STILL married. They live an hour or 2 away elsewhere. Angela agrees to let him move in for the time being since Sam is single and Tony is retired. It makes no sense but that's the BEST situation they can do to make the original fans happy...

Yet with Judith rarely there and the focus being on "Sam's Show", it won't last.

Hoping we can see @candicecandyazzara as Hank’s mom on our screens again in the sequel. The in-laws (especially this car scene in Better Off Wed) added such physical comedy to S8. I think if Sam had kids with Hank, they’d want to still be involved somehow. I can see them being a Mrs. Rossini like presence and have a recurring role. Also did you know her acting history includes Broadway, off Broadway as well as TV (70s through today)? Including work with James Coco? AND — didn’t know this!!? — her niece is the insanely gorgeous @lanaparrilla (bottom pic) and she’s been so many things I can’t even list them all. Her smile reminds me of Tony’s and she’s another pic of mine for a Micelli family relative in the sequel. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 ❤️

!
3. Angela is recently deceased and her ghost recurs to encourage Tony to carry on. This gives renewed reason for Tony to be around Sam/family and eventually start dating again without vilifying any of the original characters.

While not as outright off- putting, it still lacks appeal, especially considering the rest of the revealed premise. Even if all the best pieces were in place (including Mona and Angela with non-caricature Tony), this reboot/sequel is well past its 'best by' date.

They waited too long to do this reboot, it should have been done and finished by now. I read Tony wanted to do a 2 hour movie or something in 2002. That's what should have happened. That's when Sam would have had kids around 9/10 years old. But then time jump to 2023 and 20+ years later and we are to believe she has kids at 9/10/11/12 years of age still?! UGH!

The reboot won't last more than 1 season of 10 episodes or whatever number they got. Hopefully they make a good finale and wrap it up. It's gonna be worse than Punky Brewster because at least that came back and they tied up the story of her mother who abandoned her.

Of course, in a perfect world and reality, we could've gotten some type of Who's the Boss? reunion when Katherine Helmond was still alive (thus we wouldn't have to get into the inevitably awkward question of Mona's current whereabouts).

But I suppose that at this point, we might as well see it now (just for the hell of it) than not see it at all. I guess there is part of me that's intrigued at the idea of seeing a now grown up Samantha with kids of her own (and somehow, still living in Angela's house in Connecticut) and Tony now as a grandfather who still works as a housekeeper.
