Today is the 34th birthday of Nora Lum, better known by her professional name of Awkwafina. She was born on Long Island and began studying music in her teens. She first performed as a rapper when she was thirteen.

Awkwafina first started working in film about six years ago. She raised her acting profile dramatically in 2019, when she starred as Billi Wang in The Farewell. She won a number of acting honors, including a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Awkwafina worked at a publishing house after she finished college, while trying to get her music career started. Her debut hip-hop album, Yellow Ranger, came out in 2014. Since then, she has released a second album and several non-album singles. Also in 2014, she made several appearances on MTV’s Girl Code.

Awkwafina made her feature film debut in 2016, in a small role in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Two years later, she had prominent supporting roles in Ocean’s Eight and Crazy Rich Asians. A year later, along with her breakout role in The Farewell, she appeared in Paradise Hills and Jumanji: The Next Level.

Awkwafina is the co-creator and star of Awkwafina is Nora from Queens. The Comedy Central series began airing in 2020 and has been renewed for a third season.

Last year, Awkwafina joined the MCU as Katy in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and also starred in Breaking News in Yuba County. She will be the voice of Scuttle for Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, and will also star in the upcoming Renfield.
