Default Star Wars calls out racism against Moses Ingram...

, tells Obi-Wan Kenobi viewers "don't be a racist"

https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/sta...ns-1235281388/

Ahead of Obi-Wan Kenobi's premiere, Lucasfilm warned Ingram that she was likely to suffer racist abuse. “It was something that Lucasfilm actually got in front of, and said, ‘This is a thing that, unfortunately, likely will happen. But we are here to help you; you can let us know when it happens,’” Ingram told The Independent. Well, over Memorial Day Weekend, Ingram posted examples of the racist abuse she's received on her Instagram Stories. In response, the official Star Wars Twitter account overnight called out the racist abuse. "We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold. If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist," the account tweeted. "There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy, don’t choose to be a racist.

Can Star Wars ever solve its fan racism problem in wake of the racist abuse directed at Moses Ingram?

The Obi-Wan Kenobi star followed in the footsteps of John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran in being subjected to racist abuse from a certain segment of Star Wars fans ."It took very little time before the racism hit the fan," says Brandon Yu, noting that Lucasfilm had apparently warned Ingram of the potential for racist abuse, resulting in Star Wars making the rare decision to denounce racism via its official Twitter account. "Granted, there is a broader, bleak truth within Ingram’s resignation to her situation — there’s little even a company like Disney can do to stop racism online — and one can see not only the tweets defending Ingram, but her casting to begin with, as a corrective from Disney to handle things differently this time around," says Yu. "(Although, with Obi-Wan Kenobi being a miniseries, Ingram’s role is set in stone — who’s to say how her character arc would have been handled in an ongoing series following the online hate.) This kind of change may also be a direct result from Boyega’s own efforts. After his public comments to GQ, a Disney executive reached out to him, leading to 'a very honest, very transparent conversation.'"

ALSO:
  • Ewan McGregor denounces "horrendous" racist bullying of Moses Ingram: “I heard some of them this morning and it just broke my heart," he said in a video posted to Star Wars' Twitter account Tuesday evening. “Moses is a brilliant actor, she’s a brilliant woman and she’s absolutely amazing in this series…I just want to say as the leading actor in the series, as the executive producer on the series, that we stand with Moses. We love Moses, and if you’re sending her bullying messages, you’re no Star Wars fan in my mind. There’s no place for racism in this world.”
  • Star Wars fans rally online in support of Ingram
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount denounces Star Wars fan racism in defending "singular talent" Ingram
  • Moses Ingram's Reva is the perfect antagonist for Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Prior to the premiere of Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, many of us had no idea what we were going to get ourselves into with the series," says Rachel Leishman. "In Star Wars: Rebels, we got a look into what Obi-Wan was doing between the Star Wars prequels and the original trilogy but, for the most part, we knew that Old Ben was hiding away on Tatooine and looking after Luke Skywalker. But throughout the franchise as a whole, we could see places where more of Ben’s story could fit into the larger universe. And that’s exactly what Obi-Wan Kenobi is giving us, just in a way we never expected. It was one thing to have Vader be a part of the story, but it is another to make Vader searching for his old master the central focus of the series. And that all boils down to Reva."

Trevor Noah slams racist Star Wars fans for harassing Obi-Wan Kenobi's Moses Ingram

“Nobody should have to just shut up and take racism,” Noah said on The Daily Show. “Especially in Star Wars. Like, guys, what is this? Racism in Star Wars?”
