While Netflix added a last-minute “Warning: Contains graphic violence involving children" card to the beginning of Stranger Things 4 in response to the killing of 19 kids in a Uvalde, Texas elementary school classroom, there was no such warning for viewers watching violence against children in the first episode of Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. "The new Disney+ series starring Ewan McGregor did not offer a warning to audiences," says the Los Angeles Times' Nardine Saad. "Instead, viewers took to social media to notify one another about the potentially triggering content and questioned Disney’s decision to proceed with it given this week’s tragic events." As one Twitter user put it: "I don’t even know what the right thing would have been for Disney to do, but…that’s not how I wanted to start my escapism after this s****y week." As Saad notes, Netflix added its content warning to Stranger Things even though its depiction of violence against children was actually released earlier this month in sneak peek footage. Representatives for Disney did not immediately respond Friday to the Los Angeles Times’ request for comment.

UPDATE: Disney+ has added a content warning to Obi-Wan Kenobi after viewer complaints: “Although this fictional series is a continuation of the story from Star Wars movies filmed many years ago, some scenes may be upsetting to viewers in light of the recent tragic events,” the note reads in the “details” section of the show. “Warning: Contains violence involving children.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi adds another content warning for Episode 5 in response to the Uvalde school massacre

“There are certain scenes in this fictional series that some viewers may find upsetting," reads the warning at the top of the episode premiering today. The warning was added for the same reason one was attached to Episode 1 following complaints: a scene of violence against children.

Disney+ should've edited out Obi-Wan Kenobi's violence against children scene in wake of the Uvalde massacre

"In the creative team’s defense, the show was obviously written months, if not a year or more before Uvalde, which occurred less than 48 hours ahead of the season premiere," says Mike Redmond. "Granted, the writers should have anticipated a school shooting happening at any given moment because this is America, but we’re also talking about a massive Sandy Hook-level event. My point is any similarities in Obi-Wan are a terrifying coincidence but make no mistake, there is a jarring parallel to Uvalde that I honestly can’t believe Disney and Lucasfilm didn’t edit it out. They knew it was there because, again, that content warning didn’t happen just for kicks."
