NBC "soured" on the Super Bowl-winning retired QB, who was envisioned as an heir apparent for Sunday Night Football's Cris Collinsworth, according to the New York Post's Andrew Marchand. "On the air, Brees, 43, had an up and down rookie season that was highlighted by a poor performance in his biggest broadcast of the year, the Bengals-Raiders playoff game," reports Marchand. Soon after Marchand published his story, Brees tweeted: "Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided. I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids or all of the above. I’ll let you know."

NBC confirms Drew Brees won't return after one year of calling football games

"The unbelievable busyness of an NFL career and then really not taking a break at all and launching right in with us with both Notre Dame football and the NFL, it was certainly an around-the-clock assignment," NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua said in confirming the news, first reported last month in the New York Post. "This was definitely a lifestyle choice for him, which is totally understandable."

The former NFL QB was essentially dropped for his poor performance in NBC’s wild-card game between the Raiders and Bengals, says Jimmy Traina. But up until that point, Brees only had experience calling Notre Dame games. "The difference in visibility and pressure and importance between a Notre Dame–North Carolina football game at 2:30 ET on a Saturday afternoon and an NFL playoff game is enormous," says Traina. Brees didn't get the opportunity to become ready to call NFL games, let alone playoff games, because NBC usually only has one NFL game per week.
