Default Charlie's Guns - Kate Jackson - Jaclyn Smith - Farrah Fawcett

Drew Barrymore likely isn't going to like this video:

Even Charlie has a gun in one of these clips from the show - and more than once the angels have pulled a gun on each other.

Around the time that the 2000 Charlie's Angels movie was coming out, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu went on The Rosie O'Donnell Show.

I'm going to paraphrase a bit, but Rosie at one point asks Drew and Lucy about who's decision was it to not have the Angels use any guns. Lucy first says it was Drew's idea and that it was an amazing one because if they go in there and are supposed to be taken seriously (despite otherwise in Lucy's words, being a "goofy, fun movie"), you want to make sure that you replace it with something strong and is as equally intense. Lucy added that she knew that kids (especially girls) were going to see the movie so there was a certain responsibility. So according to Lucy, they didn't want kids to go out and think and act like Charlie's Angels like when they were younger. And nowadays according to Lucy, they know that kids could have access to guns and have already seen it. Lucy adds that something like that is really horrible.

When Rosie asked Drew if there was a lot of resistance on a studio level when she brought it up, Drew said that it was all a matter of how can you make that work and what do you replace that with. Drew then says that she had been talking a lot about Indiana Jones and Superman and genres that were in Drew's mind, a little bit more romantic than some of the western movies with a lot of artillery and body counts. Drew did immediately follow that up by saying she still believes that stuff like that is great too. But Drew then says that there's also a responsibility and it's not patronized or beaten over your head.

Lucy then chimed in by saying that they're not yelling at the audience to not use guns. She and Drew were just saying that they're going to kick a guy in the groin if they're coming at them. Drew then said that you do the work with your hands and mentions how interesting it would be to live in a world if you could actually, primarily do hand-to-hand combat. Plus according to Drew, they jump out of airplanes and drive speedboats and race cars, and there's so much going on, that the audience wouldn't miss that. The important thing to do according to Drew is to not take something away, replace it with something fun.

After hearing that, Rosie tells them that she thinks that it's great that there's an actress who is able to stand up and say that she thinks this is important and wishes that they could do it another way and then actually go through and do it. Rosie concludes by giving Drew the thumbs up gesture and saying "Way to go, Drew Barrymore!"

10 Movies That Were Only Made With VERY WEIRDLY SPECIFIC Conditions

8. Drew Barrymore Insisted The Angels Couldn't Use Guns - Charlie's Angels

Drew Barrymore wasn't just one of the stars of 2000's big-screen Charlie's Angels adaptation, she was also a producer and, better yet, was the entire reason the film got made in the first place, having purchased the big-screen rights years prior.

As a result, Barrymore had a tremendous amount of control over the film's creative direction, and her most prominent contribution was insisting that the Angels never fire guns.

Though the villains throughout the film use firearms, Barrymore demanded that the Angels use no such weaponry, with them instead relying upon their martial arts skills and tech savvy.

As for why Barrymore ruled that the titular trio not use guns? Co-producer Leonard Goldberg explained:

Quote:
"We talked about that, and we thought that given the violence that's going on in our country... The villains have plenty of guns. They have big guns, small guns, rockets, helicopters, bombs, everything. But we thought, let the Angels show you that you can do it without guns."
Considering the gun violence still endemic in the U.S. over 20 years later, it's a valid point, though somewhat ironically the 2019 reboot featured plentiful firearm use from the new Angels.
