Esther Rolle (and John Amos) were jealous of Jimmie Walker and Walker turning into the lead character. Rolle should have been happy she was on that series, she made more money than she ever had in her life before and after.
(Quote) (in bold) Amos and Rolle, who both had activist inclinations of their own, were displeased by the turn the show was taking. As Rolle put it in a 1975 interview with Ebony: "He's 18 and he doesn't work. He can't read and write. He doesn't think. The show didn't start out to be that. … I resent the imagery that says to Black kids that you can make it by standing on the corner saying 'Dyn-o-mite!" I dont really know where Rolle was coming from, except she was jealous of Walker (and Walker saying in an interview years later on Youtube (easily found) that the cast of the show didnt get along well, and his only friend was the actor who played Bookman)... But concerning JJ....He graduated high school. He did at least have one fast food job (with the chicken hat). He was a talented painter who I believe went to an art school. He read newspapers and books. JJ was also very respectful and protective of his family. Also, he played a teenager, and most teenage boys are goofballs. So I dont think the analogy was fair. But Rolle and Amos grew up in a very segregated America and knew the challenges of their culture, so they took offense at the whole "Dynomite!" thing. Or the wearing of the chicken hat. Maybe. |

I used to be much more familiar with GT--I watched it every morning on TBS, and a lot of the original CBS airings and probably when it was on TV Land. I don't recall a portrayal of JJ that he couldn't read or write.
Yes, JJ did have a job, too. And I'm not sure where she got the attitude that he "doesn't think." Someone needed to remind Rolle that this was a Sitcom. I recognize that she and Amos disliked the attention he got--but the show runners were giving him the attention that viewers responded to. |

There was no jealousy. Rolle and Amos were firm in their beliefs. They were trying to prevent the show from becoming a "Happy Days" with catch phrases shouted out. The issue was not jealousy. They were not thrilled with Walker hired to be a comedian. Walker has repeatedly said that during the entire series Amos and Rolle never spoke to him out of character. They treated him as he did not exist. They were serious actors and resented a goofy comedian on the show. Walker had no acting experience and was hired for his comedic antics from his nightclub act.
Amos and Rolle had a point. But I think they over-reacted. I admire the early scripts of Good Times. Very serious scripts with making life in the projects with comedy. The character of JJ was needed. There should have been a compromise and Dynomite could have been said every 5 shows or something. But JJ was a necessary pilar on the show. The phrase Dynomite also annoyed Ron Howard of Happy Days. Happy Days was not a hit its first season and was considered for cancellation. The ABC executive was envious of the success of Good Times and saw how the catch phrase made the show popular. There were JJ T shirts, posters, and everyone was saying it. The executive brought the Fonzie catch phrases to Happy Days and Ron Howard was not happy how the show changed. But unlike Good Times, Happy Days embraced it and milked those phrases for 10 years. Long story short Amos and Rolle had good intentions in not wanting to take the show in that direction. The irony is once Amos was fired they killed the catch phrase anyway. It would be a good trivia question which episode was last to hear Dynomite. There is one episode where Rolle says it and I bet she resented it

Interesting they said it after Amos was gone but it was clearly pretty much gone after season 3 with a few exceptions.
