Ozzy, Sharon, Jack and Kelly Osbourne became instant reality sensations when The Osbournes premiered on MTV on March 5, 2002. Thanks to The Osbournes, which ran for four seasons through 2005 and was inspired by a 2000 MTV Cribs episode, the Prince of Darkness earned a reputation as a doddering homebody. It launched the world of celeb-reality, leading in short order to shows from Gene Simmons, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, and just about every other celebrity who was willing to let strangers with cameras into their home. It arguably led to the prevalence of family reality shows like Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and it launched the media careers of Sharon, Kelly, and Jack Osbourne, who have dabbled in everything from chat shows to pop music."

When The Osbournes debuted on MTV I think it was the start of a new trend of music stars to have their own shows and I think Ozzy Osbourne had been secretly planning to have a TV show and perhaps make a new album. So MTV came up with the idea to have a sitcom that focused on the lives of Ozzy Osbourne and his family when he wasn't touring and when The Osbournes debuted it was a smash hit not only in TV history but for MTV and once the first episode debuted people saw that Ozzy Osbourne could not only sing but be a sitcom star and not only did it score Ozzy a lot of new fans but it made Kelly Osbourne a singing star with her debut album and it proved that The Osbournes was the hit MTV had been waiting for. And as the first season went on The Osbournes became bonafide stars by having merchandise such as shirts watches dolls and a soundtrack to match. But after The Osbournes ended MTV knew that music stars and reality shows and sitcoms were a great mix to put in the MTV soup
