I always felt the frailties built into the protagonists in MTM and Newhart, made them somewhat tedious, while MASH and TAGS were more "good timey".
If Laura Petrie had not been such a doll, I doubt that I ever would have watched more than a couple episodes of MTM. And Newhart? I used to get a kick out of Larry, Daryl, and Derrell...I realize that's probably not the Newhart you are talking about...but that is my point. |

I wasn't impressed with this article at all, I think the writer completely misses the point. The great rerun shows of the 60's had a central focus, they were uncomplicated, they moved in a straight line, get you to the end and you had a few laughs along the way.
Gentleman Jim used the word tedious to describe The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Bob Newhart Show and I think he hit the nail on the head. I love both shows don't get me wrong, but the plotting is detailed and the moves at a slower pace it takes more of an effort to watch them and get into the action of the episode. This works when a series is on once a week but when you're watching five episodes a week it becomes a little too much to deal with. |

I have never been able to get into MASH. Telling jokes while performing surgery? Nope, sorry. I guess I'm not an Alan Alda fan.
