Howard Hesseman, part of the ensemble that made WKRP in Cincinnati a television staple, died Saturday at Cedar Sinai hospital in Los Angeles from complications following colon surgery. In addition to WKRP in Cincinnati, Hesseman played Captain Pete Lassard in Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment, Sam Royer on One Day at a Time, and schoolteacher Charlie Moore on Head of the Class. Born in Lebanon, Oregon, he attended the University of Oregon before becoming a founding member of the San Francisco comedy troupe The Commitee along with fellow actor David Ogden Stiers. He used the name Don Sturdy early in his career while working as a radio DJ. Still using the alias, Hesseman made his first television appearances, working on cop show Dragnet in 1968. In the episode, his character was a panelist on a TV show opposite series stars Sgt. Joe Friday and Officer Gannon. From there, Hesseman launched a career as a role player in various sitcoms. He was part of the Andy Griffith Show and The Bob Newhart Show. In July 1969, he appeared with The Committee in several sketches on The Dick Cavett Show, joined in one sketch by singer Janis Joplin. His bigget role was yet to come. He played anti-disco DJ John “Dr. Johnny Fever” Caravella on WKRP in Cincinnati from 1978 to 1982. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 1980 and 1981 for the role. That role cemented him as a go-to actor, and he reprised the character in nine episodes of The New WKRP in Cincinnati and also directed several episodes of the 1991-93 series revival. In the late 1980s into the 1990s, Hesseman played teacher Charlie Moore on the ABC series Head of the Class. He also played Sam Royer, the man who married Bonnie Franklin’s Ann Romano on the original One Day at a Time from 1982 to 1984. He made three appearances on Saturday Night Live, then took on a decidedly different role in 1995, when he played the Marqui de sade in Quills at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood. He was fully naked in one scene. Hesseman appeared in three epiode of That ’70s Show In 2001, then did three for Boston Legal. He continued working through 2018, where he had a part in the 2018 film Dirty Politics. His last TV role was in a 2017 episode of Fresh Off The Boat. Information on survivors and memorial plans was not immediately available. |

Wasn't Howard Hesseman also in that movie Munchie that was the sequel to Munchies that was about an alien like creature? That movie was one of Howard's funniest roles and it also had a young Jennifer Love Hewitt. What a surprise that Howard Hesseman has passed because you hadn't seen him around much and never recalled hearing he had an illness

Loni Anderson pays tribute to WKRP in Cincinnati co-star Howard Hesseman
"I’m devastated and heartbroken," Anderson told Fox News of Hesseman, who died Saturday at age 81. "The warmth and depth of our 40-year friendship only grew stronger with each decade. Howard was eloquent…stylish…and hilarious," the actress shared. "I loved getting his erudite ‘Dear Lady Loni’ emails. My favorite Howard sign-off…a quote by Louis Armstrong…’Jazz is what you are.’ And now Howard, forever missed is just what you are." Tim Reid calls WKRP in Cincinnati co-star Howard Hesseman "a unique person and a gentle soul" "He was a real hippie, long after tie-dye and beads had lost their appeal for many," Reid wrote in a tribute to Hesseman, who died at age 81 last weekend. "Off screen, he was smooth and cool in the older definition of cool — very relaxed, very well-educated. He was a wonderful person to sit down with for a couple of drinks to discuss life. He always had his signature style with his hats and scarfs. He was wearing red shoes before any guys, outside of Elton John, were wearing red shoes. Howard and I traveled the world together. We chased giraffes in Africa. We met up on vacations with our wives in Paris and Italy. We were two opposites, spirit-wise. He had that quiet humor. I can’t remember ever hearing him express himself in a really loud, aggressive way. As an actor, Howard was so talented. He could play drama, he could play comedy, and he could improvise with the best of them. He was like a chameleon — whatever the scene called for in terms of believability of the situation, he brought with his unique style. WKRP and the character of Dr. Johnny Fever was a perfect fit for Howard. Series creator Hugh Wilson gave us a level of creative freedom that was unheard of in television production. Howard and I were given control of the characters of Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap. Not the words they said, but the ability to shape the characters. He encouraged us to bring a measure of our personal feelings and style to characters. There was a little friction at the beginning of WKRP between Howard and Hugh, but once Howard saw Hugh was serious about giving us freedom, mutual respect was established and the joyful complexities of Johnny Fever emerged." |
