When it comes to producing hit movies MGM has always been one of the top movie companies fourth in line to 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures and you always know that when MGM has a great movie it will be a huge hit. When they first started out MGM made great movies such as Gigi and The Pink Panther series of films to classics such as Yours Mine And Ours and they even tried to make a deal with Disney when they bought Disney MGM Studios "Now Disney Hollywood Studios" theme park I think they had plans to buy Disney and when they ended their partnership with Disney it really hurt MGM a lot and caused a lot of pain. But with family movies such as All Dogs Go To Heaven and it's sequels MGM knew that animated movies was their strongest link. But what really caused MGM to go downhill was in the 80's they would have movies hoping that they would become hits but did not achieve the success they had hoped for in theaters. Take for example when Valley Girl debuted in theaters in 1983 MGM thought it would be a hit but it was a slow starter at first but the one thing that saved the film was Nicolas Cage because it was his film debut. Another example was the movie Walk Like A Man which also was a slow starter for MGM and the only two superstars that saved the movie were Howie Mandel and Cloris Leachman and then Howie Mandel went to star in another MGM film which was Little Monsters in 1989 and while Fred Savage was the star it was actually Howie Mandel who made Little Monsters a hit for MGM. But what I think is causing MGM to go more downhill is that they have movies and make lots of sequels to them that fail. Take for example when Barbershop came out it was a huge hit but then they made Barbershop 2 and 3 and the movie spin-off Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah and they thought a trilogy of Barbershop would work and MGM thinks that comedies are the strongest link for them. I think MGM should try to return to it's classic formula and make movies that actually do well in theaters

MGM never had any ownership of Disney-MGM Studios.
MGM's downfall was Kerkorian, who stripped the company of its assets and turned it into a ghost of its former self. |
