Default The Decline and Fall of Warner Bros. Cartoons | THE MERRIE HISTORY OF LOONEY TUNES

Television rules a nation as Termite Terrace tries to play nice with the emerging medium. But try as they might to keep their heads above water, the studio will soon be pulled under thanks to a combination of ill-timed departures, broken contracts and Chuck Jones becoming too artsy for his own good.

It's definitely a hit piece, but they did go to a lot of trouble putting together all of these clips. They seem fixated on what they called the lowered quality of the early 60s Looney Tunes, while I don't have any problem with those toons at all. There was really nothing on the 40s and early 50s cartoons, when Bugs was in his heyday, just as the studio generally was.

I do agree with them about the Bill Lava music scores after Milt Franklyn died, which really weren't well-keyed to the cartoon as Stalling's and Franklyn's were. Budget cuts were partially to blame, and by the time you get to the DePatie-Freleng cartoons of the mid to late 60s, they're just stock, canned music, which basically goes well with dreadful animation.

What happened to one of the greatest animated franchises of all time? How did Bugs Bunny go from being the most popular animated character, to near irrelevancy? 37.7 million people watched Looney Tunes every week in the early 90s. So how did Warner Bros. manage to destroy one of the most beloved animated franchises in history? This is the wild, infuriating story of what happened the The Looney Tunes.

Miguel Munuera examines how strategic failures, constant corporate restructuring, and the de-prioritization of classic animation transformed an iconic studio asset. By tracing shifts from cinema shorts to modern streaming platforms, this analysis explores the recurring mismanagement that marginalized legendary characters despite their enduring global popularity and massive commercial potential.
