Was this special doomed from the moment that the decision was made to shoot it in videotape in front of a live-studio audience instead of with a single camera like on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis? And was it made even worse by essentially, forcing out the original producers in favor of James Komack from Welcome Back Kotter?
