"Grey’s Anatomy" Renewed for Season 19 at ABC; Ellen Pompeo Closes Deal to Continue as Meredith

"Grey’s Anatomy‘s" record-breaking run will continue — with its leading lady Ellen Pompeo. ABC has renewed Shondaland’s hugely popular medical drama for a 19th season, and Pompeo has signed a new one-year deal to continue as the show’s title character, Meredith Grey.

Pompeo also has been upped from co-executive producer to executive producer for Season 19. Fellow executive producer Krista Vernoff will remain at the helm of the series as showrunner.

ABC boss on Grey's Anatomy's future after Season 19 renewal: "We will have as much Grey’s as we can have"

“Grey’s Anatomy is still at the top of its game creatively, it’s our most watched drama, it’s one of the top shows on television,” said Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, at the TV press tour. “I think the current season they are having is extraordinary, we are delving into stories and characters in as deeper way as we ever had. Ultimately, any decisions around that franchise are going to be made by the stewards of the franchise, Shonda and Krista and Ellen. We will have as much Grey’s as we can have, it’s one of the things we are most proud of at ABC.” According to Deadline's Nellie Andreeva, a final decision on whether Season 19 will be the final season will be made later this year, but it's possible that ABC would want Grey's to end with Season 20.
