Even if, considering Michael J. Fox's talents, it was the best choice at least at the time? Plus, Meredith Baxter's Elyse quickly went from being the main lead to a supporting character because she's never been known to be funny. Somebody asked this question elsewhere. Basically, the concept of Alex's character (i.e. a teenage yuppie Republican with ex-hippie parents, thus serving as the perfect counter to his personality) couldn't theoretically last for long. And it was silly on the show's part to add a kid brother for Alex and make him into his clone.

Alex was the main character beginning in the 1983-84, and was the breakout star. He carried the show for years, and made it the 2nd most watched show in the mid 80s. If Alex had not been the main character, the show would not have lasted 4 seasons.

Couldn't agree more. The show would have ended much sooner without the focus on Alex.
