Matthew Perry to Write Autobiography

Matthew Perry is to lift the lid on his life and career in an autobiography.

Flatiron Books, a division of Macmillan, won the worldwide rights in a major overnight pre-empt – essentially taking the book off the table ahead of an auction – with a deal in the mid-seven figure range.

The untitled memoir will be published in fall 2022.




In the book, Perry will take readers behind-the-scenes and onto the soundstage of the sitcom "Friends" while opening up about his private struggles with addiction.

It is set to be a candid and self-aware book told with his trademark humor, with Perry vividly detailing his lifelong battle with the disease and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all.

Matthew Perry is done writing his memoir.

The 52-year-old actor on Tuesday took to social media to reveal that he's finished penning the book, with an image of a title page on top of a stack of papers atop a laptop.

'My ego doesn't like that I have to stop writing about myself,' Perry, who played Chandler Bing on the NBC smash hit Friends, said in the caption. 'But the book is now done. So that's that.'

The Williamstown, Massachusetts native in February tweeted a cover of the book in announcing it would be released November 1.

'So much has been written about me in the past,' Perry said. 'I thought it was time people heard from me. The highs were high, the lows were low.

'But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldn’t. And it’s all in here. I apologize it’s not a pop up book.'

The book's publisher Flatiron Books said last year that Perry, who's been seen in films such as The Whole Nine Yards, Fools Rush In and 17 Again, would be candid about his past issues with drug abuse.

'In the book, Perry takes readers behind the scenes and onto the soundstage of the most successful sitcom of all time while opening up about his private struggles with addiction,' Flatiron Books said in a news release last October.

The memoir from the actor will be 'told with his trademark humor' in a 'candid and self-aware' manner, with Perry 'vividly detailing his lifelong battle with the disease and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all,' the publisher said.

Flatiron Books' Megan Lynch said in a news release last year, 'We need humor, we need catharsis, and we need to agree on something - and Matthew’s extraordinary story, told in his inimitable voice, is that thing.

'Matthew’s book has unrivaled potential to bring people together, which feels especially galvanizing right now, a time of isolation and division.'

Perry, who appeared on the Friends: The Reunion special last tear with costars Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and Jennifer Aniston, has past been open about his personal travails of substance abuse amid his high-pressure career.

On the HBO Max special, Perry opened up about the pressure he put himself under while performing on the hit series.

'To me, I felt like I was going to die if they didn't laugh,' he said. 'If I didn't get the laugh I was supposed to get, I would freak out.'

A source told US Weekly in February that Perry was looking 'to recount his experiences, both good and bad, to help others and set the record straight over a number of incidents that were either untold until now, taken out of context or in some cases totally twisted the wrong way and needing complete clarification.

'He’ll delve into his addictions, of course, plus clear up rumors about his feelings for the Friends costars. Plus, he’ll discuss what went wrong in a number of his past relationships,' the source said. 'It wasn’t always a bed of roses for Matthew on and off the Friends set, and Matt isn’t going to sugarcoat the tougher times that he went through with the cast. He’ll also discuss what it was like at the reunion, both good and bad.'
