Default Janet DuBois was the reason for Janet being added to the show in season 5

This interview with Jimmie Walker explains how Janet Dubios was always pushing for bigger roles and more to do. So that is how the whole adoption story was developed around her

This is at the 9:10 part of the interview

Well, it was an unnecessary addition. The father gets killed off, the mother gets written out…so they bring on a little kid? How is that gonna improve ratings in any way?

Yup so now we know that Janet was all behind pushing for a larger role. Up until now I had no clue why a kid was added

This is how it should’ve panned out

This is what all went down since the end of season four…

Florida married Carl and the two relocated to Arizona to help Carl battle his lung cancer, but Florida feels as if J.J. and Thelma aren’t old or mature enough to look after Michael and thinks that the trio alone is a bad idea, so she asks her sister, Clara to come down and stay with the trio, she accepts

Wilona now has a man, Frank, introduced later in Season Five, but if I was in charge, he would be a regular

J.J. has a girlfriend

More appearances from The Awesome Foursome

Less appearances from Bookman

Not no damn Penny

And Keith’s season six addition didn’t help either.

It would have been interesting if Jimmie Walker in the video also explained as how Janet Jackson got the part for Penny. Did the producers audition other girls for the part, or Janet was shoed in because of her "family" stardom.

The Jacksons had a TV show in the spring of 1977 and janet jackson did the mae west act on the show. That's how she was discovered and also why you saw her do the mae west act on Good times which was her doing that.........."hi you doing big boy"

And yet, the last few shows of the last season, there was very little interaction (to say chemistry) between the Misses DuBois and Jackson. I wonder if they might have had a falling out?

Also, I wonder if Janet Jackson might have heard during her time on the sho about Miss DuBois evidently being the daughter of Cab Calloway- which wasn't known until after Miss DuBois's passing!

I think it was because of Florida’s return and the addition of Keith. There was little time for Penny.

I don't think Wilona was big fan of Penny saying and acting that line on the show

Janet DuBois was pretty much the de facto female lead (and maybe even lead in general given that she was the first billed star that season) sole remaining "adult figure" in light of Esther Rolle's absence. So I could reasonably see her pushing for her character to have more things to do besides merely being the Evans family's neighbor/best friend.

She have been let go since her character was no longer needed
