The USFL, which ran from 1983 to 1985 as a spring counterpart to the NFL and was most notable for having Donald Trump as part-owner of a team, is set to return next year with Fox Sports as a minority owner. The USFL would mark the third attempt having spring football in recent years. The Alliance of American Football made it through eight weeks before suspending operations in 2019. Last year's XFL reboot was suspended due to the pandemic. Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson and business partner Dany Garcia are planning to bring the XFL back next year. “We look forward to providing players a new opportunity to compete in a professional football league and giving fans everywhere the best football viewing product possible during what is typically a period devoid of professional football,” said Brian Woods, co-founder of the new USFL. |

Fox Sports' USFL is expected to kick off in April
The United States Football League, which had a brief run in the 1980s with Donald Trump as owner of one of the teams, is coming back in early 2022 with Fox as the sole owner of the league. |

It won't ever work in this day and age, but the USFL was awesome from 1983-1985.

I hope Cleveland or Columbus gets a team.

USFL's eight teams will play all 43 of their games in Birmingham, Alabama
The rebooted United States Football League consists of Michigan Panthers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars, and Pittsburgh Maulers, the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Orleans Breakers and Tampa Bay Bandits. But of the eight teams, only one will be geographically correct since all games will be played in Birmingham. "The approach eliminates all travel costs, an important consideration given that the primary purpose of the games will be to put them on TV, and to use them as the impetus for legal gambling in the states that allow it," says Mike Florio of NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk. "Where the games will be played doesn’t matter. Whether anyone attends the games doesn’t matter." |

NBC and Fox will simulcast the USFL opener in primetime on Saturday, April 16
As NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk notes, "it’s extremely rare for two broadcast networks to simulcast the same game, and it guarantees that plenty of people will watch." |

A group of owners and executives from the original USFL is suing Fox over its use of USFL
The lawsuit filed today by "The Real USFL LLC" alleges that Fox's USFL, which is scheduled to launch April 22, is an "unabashed counterfeit." As Awful Announcing points out, "in the lawsuit, a link to the original version of the Fox press release on June 3, 2021, includes language that implies that Fox owns all of the rights to the USFL trademarks and that the new league is a continuation of the original. However, when you visit that same link now, those references have been removed and the release implicitly states that the new USFL is not affiliated with the old USFL, though they do claim to own the necessary trademarks." |
