"Rebel" Canceled by ABC after One Season

Five episodes into its freshman run, ABC’s Katey Sagal-starring drama "Rebel" has been canceled.

It was clearly a tough decision for the network because the series, inspired by the life of activist Erin Brockovich, comes from ABC’s most valuable drama showrunner, Krista Vernoff, who is shepherding the network’s top two scripted series, "Grey’s Anatomy" and "Station 19".

Katey Sagal responds to Rebel's cancelation: Cast and crew are "scratching our heads at the reversal of support from ABC"

Sagal thanked Rebel fans for their support in an Instagram post. But she also wondered why ABC gave up on the Erin Brockovich-inspired drama after a short amount of time. Rebel premiered on April 8 and has aired five episodes before it was canceled last Friday. "Things take time to catch on," she wrote. "Rebel tells the story of a woman who speaks up for what is right, the show has heart and purpose, funny and tears, and we, the cast, are all scratching our heads at the reversal of support from ABC.” Sagal added: “As Rebel would say, fight for what you want, make people listen, and in this case, if our show can find another, more suitable place to land, we will do the happy dance. If not, we gave it our all and made our voices heard, which is the message behind Rebel! Always Speak Up!!”

Asked by Deadline why "Rebel" was not given more time, Craig Erwich, President, ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals said, “Krista Vernoff is not just an amazing talent, she is a valued and beloved part of the Disney family. We gave Rebel a really considerable launch and a launch effort. It was a huge priority for us for midseason.

One of the advantages of a stable schedule is, you can focus and platform new shows, which Rebel was a beneficiary of. Unfortunately, it did not garner the audience that we needed it to do, so we had to make that decision.”
