Definitely the initial version, although the later, dopey version did get into some funny situations.

I liked the later portrayal, but the early Rebecca had a cool edge to her.

I think that since Kirstie wasn't known for being a comedienne, the writers probably wrote her a certain way. Once they got to know her better, they were able to write the character differently and more in line with Kirstie's comedic talents.

Do you agree with the notion that Diane unlike Rebecca never really "evolved" as a character? Basically, Diane remained a fish out of water during the five years that she worked at the bar. In other words, she remained taken aback by how uncouth or low class (taste-wise) the other characters were. Compare that to another "snob" character like Frasier, who would more than likely to join in the fun from time to time.
