Default ‘MacGyver’ To End After Season 5, Series Finale Set On CBS

https://deadline.com/2021/04/macgyve...bs-1234729818/

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Angus MacGyver will soon be taking on his last mission. The CBS action drama, a reimagining of the 1985 series, is coming to an end. MacGyver‘s five-season run will conclude with a series finale, which will air Friday, April 30, in the show’s regular 8 PM time slot.

Starring Lucas Till as the ingenious title character, an undercover government agent with strong engineering skills, MacGyver has averaged a respectable 5.85 million viewers and a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating (most current) this season under new showrunner Monica Macer. Since its September 23, 2016 launch, the series has had the thankless job of opening CBS’ Friday lineup at 8 PM, providing solid lead-in to Hawaii Five-0/Magnum P.I. at 9 PM and Blue Bloods at 10 PM.

“All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as Monica, the writers and the entire crew,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. We’re gratified we get to give this dedicated and loyal fan base the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters in the thoughtful manner this series deserves.”

MacGyver currently stars Till, Tristin Mays, Justin Hires, Meredith Eaton, Levy Tran and Henry Ian Cusick. Original co-lead George Eads left in Season 3, and his character was subsequently killed off. He is not expected to be returning for the series finale, which has already been filmed.

Macer, David Straiton, James Wan, Henry Winkler, Lee David Zlotoff, Michael Clear executive produce for CBS Studios in association with Lionsgate Television.

“Since coming on board to MacGyver last year, I have been amazed by the devotion and enthusiasm of this remarkable cast and crew, as well as the loyal fans,” said Macer. “My gratitude goes out to Lucas, Tristin, Justin, Meredith, Levy and Ian, who put everything they have into our show, specifically for the fans. We can’t wait for them to see our spectacular final episodes and the adventures that still await for Mac and the team at the Phoenix.”

Macer joined MacGyver last summer as executive producer/showrunner, replacing the series’ developer/executive producer/showrunner Peter Lenkov, who was let go following an investigation into allegations about a toxic environment on the show.

MacGyver joins two other long-running CBS series ending this season, drama NCIS: New Orleans and comedy Mom. Peacock has coming up a MacGyver parody series, MacGruber.

I liked this show, haven't watched it for a while though. I noticed that the last episode is #94. I wonder if they were originally planning to make 100 episodes so that the show would be put in syndication, but had to cut it short due to the pandemic. I imagine that the show will be rerun on some network like Ion Television.

Lucas Till on MacGyver's cancelation: "I’m like the Roger Moore of MacGyvers now thanks to your support"

“Where to begin? The past five years have been what I will look on later as THE most formative years of my life," Till wrote on Instagram. "Lots of tough, lots of love. I made life long friends, actually no, family. I learned to push myself to new limits in reaction to the CBS action drama ending after five years. breaking through and through and through. Was nervous to take up the mantle of an icon and you guys allowed me into your homes and accepted me. I’m like the Roger Moore of MacGyvers now thanks to your support. Lol,” Lucas wrote on Instagram. But this is also a love letter to my cast and crew, to those who have been with us since day 1 or day 1000, through those oppressive summer days in the Georgia heat, where the humidity envelopes you like a warm sweater to the below freezing winter days where the worst part about it is that no one believes you when you say it gets cold in Georgia. Lol. Through all the people who said we wouldn’t make it past the first 13, through all the tough times you guys always somehow brought so much joy into my life, helped me grow exponentially and you’ve shown me what it means to be a real cinema team."

MacGyver boss was "shocked" over cancelation -- she had to tweak the already-shot season finale to make it a series finale

"I got the call from the network execs, the head of the network, and I was surprised. I don’t know if I can quantify it. I guess I was shocked," showrunner Monica Macer tells TVLine of Friday's series finale. She learned of the news as she was ready for a second edit of the Season 5 finale. "I knew that in the past, MacGyver had been a bubble show, but we were so proud of the work that we did this season and so hopeful, really hopeful, that we were going to get another shot," she says. "But I also understand that there are so many decisions, high-level decisions, being made at the network and studio level that factor into this type of decision. So, we’re saddened but also really grateful that we had the opportunity to finish the [nine] episodes that were outstanding from last season and incorporate them into this season — which was no small feat on a storytelling level — and be able to finish production."

She shouldn't have strayed so far from the original MacGyver!
