While the refrigerator episode is often brought up, what about the episode "Urban Fear", about a serial killer in the area? I'm not going to make an entire rundown of episodes and their "darkness", but it seemed like Punky Brewster was only a sitcom in the sense that the jokes were only to provide levity from the heavy stuff. Maybe there were so much "heavy" storylines because sitcom writers wanted to prove that they were just as talented as writers of dramatic television. And, they also wanted to show they had the depth to write dramatic material. Also, Punky Brewster aired in the Sunday night, 7:00 slot on NBC, which was back when the Federal Communications Commission, mandated that networks put in that time slot, shows that were either family entertainment or news programming (such as 60 Minutes). |
