When California Dreams debuted in the 90's it seemed that it grew to be the second popular teen sitcom next to Saved By The Bell on the TNBC lineup that NBC developed for teens and I have never figured it out? Was it because California Dreams was more interesting than Saved By The Bell or was it the music storyline that made it a hit? Because it seemed that whenever California Dreams came out the first season was a hit but whenever the last seasons premiered California Dreams started showing signs of going downhill and when Hang Time joined the TNBC lineup I think Hang Time caused California Dreams to get cancelled because it seemed that NBC was more interested in teen sitcoms centered on sports rather than high school or music band based teen sitcoms. I also think if California Dreams would've continued it still would've been the second most popular show and could've also had spin-offs like Saved By The Bell did that kept it popular. I also think that METV should air California Dreams on their lineup because it was great and full of good music or should it be rebooted for Peacock?

One theory that I read is that why California Dreams may not be remembered fondly outside of a few people is that it typically aired after Saved by the Bell on NBC as well as in syndication. A lot of people who probably weren't watching California Dreams on Saturdays after Saved by the Bell: The New Class took over as NBC's flagship series on Saturday mornings were mainly watching and finding it in syndication.
The point is that outside of a few hardcore fans, California Dreams is mainly in the shadow of Saved by the Bell. And people simply have more memories of Saved by the Bell itself than CD (or "Saved by the Bell with a band") or Hang Time (or Saved by the Bell with a basketball team). Many people just write CD off as a clone of SBTB. |
