Default John Stamos' Fuller House Plan Would've Been A Much Better Full House Spinoff

https://screenrant.com/fuller-house-...nt-better-how/

Quote:
John Stamos' plans for Fuller House would have made a much better Full House sequel spin-off. Playing Uncle Jesse for 8 seasons in the original series, Stamos not only reprised his role for the Netflix project, but also served as an executive producer. Though he had a say in the creative process of bringing together Fuller House, Stamos apparently had a very different idea of what the show should be about, compared to what ended up on the screen.

Fuller House brought back most of the original cast members from the parent series except for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who played Michelle Tanner, as the pair have since retired from acting. Creator Jeff Franklin also returned, becoming the primary creative force behind the revival, and he wanted the show lean on nostalgia. That's why Fuller House's premise is essentially a retread of Full House, with DJ also losing a spouse, making her a single parent to three young kids. Fuller House also incorporated a lot of references to its predecessor, including direct callbacks and even full scene recreations, like Stephanie crashing Joey's car again.

While the nostalgia may have thrilled fans of Full House, this creative route proved to be unsustainable since it failed to bring in new viewers. As it turns out, Stamos wanted a very different approach to Fuller House — one that would have been better in terms of ensuring its future. According to Franklin himself in an interview with Business Insider, Stamos wanted a fresher take on the spin-off. "John wanted the show to be as contemporary and maybe a little more cutting-edge than I saw it," the creator said, but he pushed back, insisting that it was best to keep cater to their fanbase by giving them something familiar.

In the end Franklin's idea won, with Stamos eventually coming on board. But looking at how things panned out for Fuller House, it's clear that modernizing Full House would be a more clever route, especially since casual viewers and even some old fans thought the spin-off thought to be most uninspired and lazy. What's worse is, even Franklin's initial argument that he didn't want to change the characters to fit a new story didn't hold up. For starters, Fuller House's DJ was very different and somehow worse compared to her Full House version.

Long before Fuller House was given the green light by Netflix, Stamos had been working for years to bring back Full House in some capacity. In 2008 he was reportedly working on a reunion film, but most of the original Full House cast members weren't interested in reprising their roles, so nothing came of it. He then attempted to do a Full House prequel with a new set of actors that would tackle Danny, Jesse, and Joey's respective lives before they all moved in and raised the Tanner girls. Like his first attempt, this also didn't go anywhere. Nevertheless, given that Stamos has been attempting to get the project off the ground for years, it would've been for the best if they at least considered his idea. After its first four seasons, the spin-off was finally getting its own identity with new storylines to tackle. Unfortunately, it was too late as Netflix already pulled the plug, resulting in a Fuller House series finale that set up a much better future for the series.

If a Fuller House season 6 eventually gets the green light in the future, it's best for them to simply pick up where the show left off. There's a lot of stories set up in the later seasons of the show that would've been very interesting to explore, especially in terms of Stephanie's character. Perhaps it would also be best if they veer away from putting too much focus on DJ since her story is pretty much complete after her wedding to Steve.
